Enduring, timeless and impossibly chic, Loewe’s Balloon bag is the trendiest way to stash your personals this season. Four Vogue editors share styling tips on how to make the most of the shapely capacious purse.
First seen on the runway during its ethereal spring/summer 2020 show, Loewe’s shapely Balloon bag was an instant hit. The charming bucket shape has since cropped up in major cities all over the world, on the arms of the most influential people around.
Masterminded by the brand's creative director, Jonathan Anderson, the nappa and calf leather accessory has caught the eye of influencers, celebrities and editors alike. “I wanted to create something very tactile – both structured and soft,” Anderson tells British Vogue.
The certified hero piece has garnered avid interest. Sienna Miller, Chloë Sevigny, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa and Tessa Thompson count themselves among the fanbase of the buttery purse and have proven it suitable for both winter and summer outings.
Testament to its diverse styling possibilities, each celebrity has explored a unique way of wearing the Balloon. Miller has been spotted wearing her earthy tan style on numerous occasions, more often than not slung loosely over a single shoulder, whereas Mirren has taken to holding the strap of her pristine white iteration bunched in her hand.
Rooted in craft and artisanal aesthetic, the bag’s sleek appearance is as functional as one of the label’s coveted sharp suits. As with Anderson’s way with a crisp blazer, fresh yet functional design flairs ensure the Balloon is both fashionable and practical. “A bag needs to be desirable, but functionality is just as important,” says Anderson.
It boasts a knotted drawstring embellished with a Loewe charm at the tip, plus a long adjustable strap and shorter top handle. The round sturdy base was a key trait that Anderson made sure to include, resulting in an unusual, attractive shape that crucially feels balanced.
Elsewhere, the inner soft sac is where the nappa leather comes into play – it’s big enough to hold the ever-growing list of necessities we need when on the go (masks, sanitiser, keys, phone) but not so overwhelmingly large that it risks becoming a burden. The best part? It comes in a variety of sizes – small, medium and large – plus a range of contrasting and single hues.
As autumn takes hold and many of us are in the market for a mood-boosting accessory to distract from grey skies overhead, it’s time to be inspired by how the British Vogue fashion team are styling their Loewe Balloon bags this season.
