Logo a-gogo? Not so fast. The latest autumn/winter 2020 bag trends show a marked sense of restraint that’s been missing from previous, high-spirited seasons, with brand signifiers shrunk to a small smattering of tiny letters on the edge of leather receptacles. Some – whisper it – don’t bear any sign of a logo at all.
There were signs of that restraint, too, in the way that bags were clutched to the body rather protectively. At Chanel, Givenchy, and Miu Miu, huge clutch bags were held on hips and nestled in the crooks of arms, crafted in soft velvets and leathers. Even long-strap bags designed to be worn across the bod, another key autumn/winter 2020 bag trend that’s not going anywhere, were held tight, the strap curled over neatly or wrapped around the wrist.
The only signs of “look at me!” exuberance came in the form of tasselled bags – the ideal pet, if your dinner date turns out to be boring – as well as in the bags that sported chain detailing (a trend that also appeared on shoes). But the most fun to be had was via the bag charms that gave the catwalk an air of joyful practicality. Fendi led the way in this regard, with models wearing feminine coats, pencil skirts and chain-link belts, with brass cigarette lighters and Apple watches, iPhone pens and EarPod holders hanging off them as part of a collaboration with Chaos. Elsewhere, Chloé and Jacquemus adorned their bags with water-bottle holders, Chanel and Givenchy went in for EarPod holders, and Alexander McQueen outdid them all, with hip flasks hanging off waists.
One thing’s clear: if you’re looking to make a serious bag investment, this could be your season. Classic bags in grown-up shades of tan, black and cream that will truly never date were everywhere – from Hermès to Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton.
